The Gayborhood (2011-2015)

In 2011, I got a DSLR and was hired at Seattle Gay News. As staff photographer, my livelihood suddenly consisted of immersing myself in the city’s vibrant queer and trans communities, primarily documenting drag and nightlife culture. I was also brought on as the official photographer for the Seattle Pride Parade, a role I continue in today. In 2012, I dedicated myself to covering the historic fight for marriage equality in Washington state. The next few years saw me happily documenting so many friends’ weddings. Through the end of 2015, I carried on, visually representing what first endeared this community to me: its diversity and fluidity of gender expression—unfiltered, raw, and in your face.

Here are 50 frames, just a minuscule sampling, of what I captured during those exciting first few years with a camera. I look forward to someday revisiting that exciting era, digging through and curating images from hundreds of events into a book.
