Media access and proximity to the Donald was pretty awful at this event, and it really wasn't worth my time until I met ol' Bill on my way out. He came all the way from Minnesota to spread his message...
Man, those Iowans loved Dr. Ben Carson back in October. Even the Chick-fil-A cow!
Decided to take a day to myself for personal work, and came across a few Trump images I haven't yet shared from back in September. Who would've thought that so many months later he'd still be the ringleader of the GOP primaries?
Senator Maria Cantwell and U.S. Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell were among the company I got to keep last week. It was my second time working the event - the senator's special guest last year was Vice President Joe Biden. Five years ago when I was an unemployed pre-school teacher who'd never used a DSLR, who would've thought? I'm thankful for how well things have worked out these last couple years.
This was my third year in a row photographing the Brain Injury Alliance of Washington's big year-end gala, and as always it was a pleasure.
Was a pleasure photographing a step-and-repeat with U.S. Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell, special guests and, of course, Sen. Cantwell. Here's the link for free downloads of all 77 images: http://nategowdyphotography.shootproof.com/gallery/2111333/
Got to meet renowned actor, singer and dancer Ben Vereen this past weekend! Fun facts: He played the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air's biological father, appeared in "How I Met Your Mother" as the long lost father of Barney's brother, and is Usher's godfather.
This past weekend I took off for a 24-hour stint in Des Moines to attend the Iowa Democrats' annual Jefferson-Jackson Dinner. Had hoped to photograph all five presidential candidates, but Jim Webb and Lincoln Chafee dropped out days before. No matter, the trip was well worth it and a great addition to my personal project documenting the 2016 presidential campaign. Couldn't be happier with the images, got to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Katy Perry and Bernie Sanders, and also snagged drinks afterwards with area wire photographers who are doing fantastic work. Never thought I'd end up wishing I could spend the next couple months in Iowa, but am glad to finally be in a position to just get up and go here and there. Big thanks to Paul Moakley at TIME for helping me with press access to the dinner and the Hillary rally beforehand- made all the difference. Also, note to editors: all these images are unpublished and are, of course, also available in color. I'd love to see them get put out there!
I gotta head out for the evening, but I'll be sharing 50 images or so from Iowa's Jefferson-Jackson Dinner tomorrow! Here are some teasers :)
Sen. Rubio of Florida is the GOP's candidate I've been most impressed with. If not this election cycle, he's the one to look out for in the future.
